The best English picture books for young children by – Part two
Following our first article, here are five other English picture books recommended by Ellie Thompson, Editor of, one of the best UK parenting and lifestyle websites.
Giraffes Can’t Dance, Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees
Fabulous illustrations accompany the heart-warming story of Gerald the tall giraffe who is teased by all the animals in the jungle for not being able to dance.

A tale about self-esteem and overcoming negative stereotypes, your child will be rooting for Gerald as he finds his own tune and confidence. (While you brush up on your jungle inhabitants - there’s a few creatures in this book I struggled to identify, that’s for sure!)

Room On The Broom, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
Another classic picture book by hit double-act Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

Follow the witch and her cat on their journey as they are joined by some new animal friends along the way. But beware, the greedy dragon look for his tea!

Mog The Forgetful Cat, Judith Kerr
I still can’t bring myself to read Goodbye Mog, the last in this beautiful series of books, because, for me, Mog is a cat that should live forever.
Mog The Forgetful Cat is the very first adventure for the hapless tabby. First published in 1970 this book and all of the others in the series have stood the test of time, being treasured by millions of children and adults alike.
Cops and Robbers, Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg
‘Tis Christmas Eve when the robbers of good old London town plan a despicable crime – to steal all the toys they can get their hands on! Brave officer Pugh leaps to the rescue, but what happens when villain Grandma Swagg gets away?!

Find out in this delicious tale full of gorgeous illustrations.

Funnybones, Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg
This is the first story in what is now a complete classic series. Yep, it’s the tale of the dark, dark street, where you’ll find the dark, dark house, with its dark, dark cellar where the skeletons live…
Funnybones is a fabulous book full of repetitions your children will join in on and eye-catching illustrations to enchant and delight.
