Florence, Refectory of Santa Maria Novella, 16th January 2020 - What if all the power was in children's hands, just for one day? What kind of kingdom would they come up with?
These are the questions that open the Il Gufo FW20 fashion show: little big protesters come onto the stage, brandishing placards that clearly demonstrate the principles of a new kingdom: “nobility lies in what you do”, “make kindness your weapon”, “Mother Nature is our queen”.
A Scottish feel and college references are the leitmotifs of the opening looks on the runway: a Glen plaid technowool jacket for boys, paired with a burgundy sweatshirt with a contrasting coat of arms print on the back and midnight blue trousers. For girls, a maxi cape in green and blue damier wool with fringing, a matching scarf and skirt, worn with a midnight blue cashmere turtleneck jumper.
An organic certified cotton jumper with a sulky “regal” dog inlay, paired with check technowool trousers and a red down jacket.
Precious workmanship embellishes even the most everyday pieces: striped sweaters with handmade “puff” flowers, to be worn over ironic quilted diamond skirts and sculpted feather edging. And more embroidery on boys’ sweatshirts and girls’ shirt collars.
There are versatile colour palettes, but with a twist: blue, grey and billiard cloth green come together with caramel yellow, burgundy and red.
Time flies, like the clouds in Northern Europe, and it’s already time for tea. The perfect setting for a regal tea-time is an interior with decorative floral motifs that reflect a neo-classical style, with soft powdery colours such as aurora or sugared almond pink, mauve, light blue or cloud.
Aubusson tapestries are the inspiration for the girl's floral coat with a faux fur collar, worn over a dusty pink jumper with lurex yarn and super-soft grey velvet culottes.
The epitome of effortless chic, a look consisting of sparkling velvet and lurex dungarees over a soft viscose floral shirt, worn with an aurora pink faux fur jacket and beige slippers with faux fur flowers.
To counterbalance the warmth inside, the wildest unsullied nature: the sweet Scottish Highlands are just waiting to be explored. Walking shoes, sneakers or boots are essential for braving open-air adventure.
Shades of lime and olive green are now mixed with terracotta, caramel and beige.
For him, a houndstooth overshirt worn over a sweatshirt with an embroidered equestrian graphic. Super-modern trousers however come in microfibre lined with jersey.
A wraparound houndstooth skirt for her, married with a wool jumper in rock tones, with handmade appliqués and floral embroidery, and warmed by a long flared lightweight down jacket in terracotta.
The final procession, the highlight of the show, a succession of chic and sophisticated looks: a blue smoking jacket for boys and a pleated tulle dress voluminous with ruffles for her, with handmade jewelled embroidery on the bodice. And again, bright shades for the fuchsia Mikado dress studded with gleams of lurex thread, pearls, baguette beads and Swarovski crystals, meticulously hand-embroidered... for a perfect “queen of hearts”!
